Topic: Tulane Womens Coach Posted: May/31/2008 at 10:46am |
The new Tulane womens golf coach has now completed his illegal recruiting of potential transfers. Earlier this week, Tulane announced the following in a release:

Janine Fellows and Linn Gustafsson join Green Wave from UTSA, Texas State, respectively
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane University head women's golf coach John Thomas Horton announced the signing of two college transfers - Janine Fellows and Linn Gustafsson - to his first recruiting class for the 2008-09 season.
... A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Gustafsson transfers to Tulane from Texas State, where she also will be a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining. At Texas State, Gustafsson won the Southland Conference Championship by five strokes, was named Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and was an All-Southland Conference First Team selection.

Texas State has been wronged by Horton's uncontrolled ambition. Having a recruit that he early signs in November, Daniela Holmqvist of Lindingo, Sweden, contact the #1 player at Texas State to encourage her to transfer to Tulane is against NCAA rules. Not sure why Texas State would give the player a release.
Below is a portion of a February Golfweek story where Horton started promoting Tulane to players on other teams that might want to transfer - read the last sentence!
Tulane vitalized behind Horton
By DAN MIROCHA Assistant Editor
The first thing you need to know about John Thomas Horton is that he needs a nap.
The second thing you need to know about Horton, the new women’s coach at Tulane, is that he has no time for one.
“Honestly, I haven’t slept,” the 30-year-old Horton said. “I’m surprised my wife hasn’t divorced me.”
Horton has had his finger on the ‘go’ button since July 5, 2007. That’s the day he was hired to reconstruct and re-energize a Tulane women’s program that was dismantled in fall 2005 after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.
... “I had to beg some of them, honestly,” Horton said. “It’s hard to get an 18-year-old girl to come to New Orleans.
... “When I say, ‘Tulane’ and ‘New Orleans,’ (my friends) kind of give me that ‘You’re crazy’ look,” she said.
... and Daniela Holmqvist (lower right), a highly ranked junior from Sweden. Horton hopes to round out the foursome by spring with a pair of transfer students.

I think you guys have to try and find something about people to make them look bad. Some of these discussion boards are all about "trashing" people. If you only knew what it is like to be a college golf coach, you would understand.
I know Coach Horton personally and I know that he would NEVER do anything like you are suggesting to jepordize his career. He is a good guy and will show you all that he is a great coach!

Well, it didn't take long to get both sides of the coin on this thread. I don't know Coach Horton nor do I know if any of this is true. I do know that either mcm88 is a jumping the gun or golflover is the most naive person in the world. If it comes out that these things are true, then Horton is to blame and golflover, you look like an idiot. mcm88, I think you should maybe add some shread of proof to your comments.

1) Mike Akers, Texas State Womens Coach, was complaining about the contact by the Tulane signee from Sweden who was actively recruiting his #1 player from Sweden beginning in December.
2) Fellows quit after the Fall semester as the #1 player at Texas San Antonio. The coach has now resigned, so the transfer is not that big of a deal - but there were conversations last summer about transferring to Tulane.
3) Horton should not have been telling reporters that he was looking for transfers.
4) Both players come from Southland Conference schools - both the conference and NCAA are investigating the communication prior to releases. The investigations began more than a month ago.

I complete agree that he should not have said that to a reporter, pretty shady there.
mcm88, if this is true, why are you the only one letting this information be known? Why have we not seen more about this in other places?
While I still don't know is this stuff is true or untrue, I doubt the NCAA is doing anything. I have turned coaches in several times in the past and absolutely nothing is done about it. Let's face it, the NCAA doesn't give a rat's a!@ about who is cheating in golf.

1.) So, you are going to go off of a "complaint" of a coach that has lost 3 players in 1 year to transferring over hard evidence? Get a life!
2.) I know that the player from UTSA had her full release before she was EVER contacted by ANY school.
3.) Anyone who knows anything about college golf knows that there are VERY often transfers in the summer. DAAAHHHHHHH!
4.) How in the H E Double Hockey Sticks do you know what the NCAA is investigating???? Again, Get a Life!

Lover(?), you are very sensitive for someone that says there is nothing there. You fail to address the FACT that the one Swede (Tulane signee) was telling the other Swede (Texas State freshman) to transfer. I know the person that already reported it to both the NCAA and Southland Conference back in March. Lastly, Horton is quickly making his own reputation and other coaches will learn quickly what he is all about. Even Horton thinks a female recruit would be crazy to go to Tulane in downtown New Orleans (aka big water hazard!). Enjoy your life Lover!

There is NOTHING there. And you can't control what players say to one another.....so what is your point?

After numerous private messages on the subject, it is clear what occurred and that NCAA recruiting rules were violated. Yes, as usual, the NCAA will not properly investigate something like this because it happens all the time by those coaches that constantly bend the rules while recruiting.
Unfortunately, the excuse "we can't control what players say or do" is common and only results in true investigations in the high profile sports like basketball and football.
Reading Horton's quote again about signing two transfers, he even went as far as saying that he would sign them in the SPRING - think about that for a minute or two. The process of obtaining a release doesn't even begin until after the team's finish their season and SUMMER vacation has begun. So Lover, you were correct about summer, but Horton was talking Spring!
Horton has signed some above average recruits, but the reality is that their success will be limited to a ranking between 25-40, which is nothing special considering Tulane's past success.
